Contest Guidelines
General Rules and Procedures
- No entry fee
- The student will be responsible for 100% of the work.
- Entries returned to the host school.
- Winning entries will be displayed at the awards reception held May7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Martinsburg.
- The contest is open to all high school or home schooled sophomore, junior and seniors from the Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties.
- One entry per contest per student.
- Judges will be professionals from corresponding disciplines.
- Teachers will be advised if they have winning entries.
- Decisions of the judges is final

- All entries must be appropriate for display in a school setting.
Graphic Communications
Printed Piece: Entries are examples of 1, 2, 3, or 4 color printed pieces of any size or print method. The contest will be scored on the attached rubric
Tri Fold Brochure: Entries are examples of a standard tri-fold, printed 1, 2, 3, or 4 colors, printed any method. The contest will be scored on the attached rubric
Web Design Contest: An individual or a team of two is allowable; if a team approach is used all monetary awards will be divided equally.
The participant(s) is to demonstrate how a developed project with an assigned theme "21st Century Technology" has been completed through the application of graphics, multimedia, design and layout.
SKILLS DEMONSTRATED and JUDGED
- Demonstrate a consistent and appropriate variation in the use of type sizes.
- Demonstrate an appropriate use of colors.
- Incorporate objects and background images.
- Use color, graphics, navigation design and consistency from page to page.
- Use animated GIFs or FLASH as a part of the final product.
- Optimize the usage of graphic files and file management.
- Use hyperlinks and anchors effectively.
- Apply XHTML, CSS and JavaScript to create a well crafted Web site, format and document all code.
- All work is to be done strictly by the team.
- All copyright laws are to be followed; any violation will result in disqualification.
- Winning team will be scored on the attached rubric.
When completed the team needs to provide a cd containing all electronic files used to create the web site, all working files, and a list of all software used to develop the site. Additionally, the team may be required to answer questions from the judges. All entries need to be submitted by April 3st, 2012. The winning entry will be published on jamesrumsey.net the James Rumsey Institute Technology web site.
Graphic Design
Entries in the following two contests will be judged on a variety of elements: graphics and typography, artful composition of layout, presentation, and overall appeal.
Page Layout: for example - posters, magazine or newspaper spreads or ads, brochures. The contest will be scored on the attached rubric
Ad Design: for example - self-promotion packages (letterhead, business card, envelope), logo development, packaging and labels, CD/DVD and book jackets. The contest will be scored on the attached rubric
Cartoon Character: Character can be either life based or object based and must use basic colors for accurate color match if printed. Files must be saved in a web savvy format. The contest will be scored on the attached rubricCharacter must relate to this year’s theme: PROMOTE A GREEN THEME
Visual Media
Short Video: Limited to a maximum length of five minutes, these entries will judged on composition, continuity, camera angles, audio quality, and editing. Judges will use the attached scoring rubric to judge all entries.
Black and White Photo: These entries are examples of B/W photos of any subject. Judges will use the attached scoring rubric to judge all entries.
Color Photo: These entries are examples of color photos of any subject taken for use in newspaper or yearbook. Judges will use the attached scoring rubric to judge all entries.
Enhanced Photo: Entries are digital photos enhanced in PhotoShop or equivalent photo editing software. The photo may be of any subject. Judges will use the attached scoring rubric to judge all entries.
2 DimensionalFine Art Piece: Entries are examples of fine artwork using any single medium or mixed-media. The artwork may be of any subject. Judges will use the attached scoring rubric to judge all entries.
